My earliest memory is of being in a boy’s club doing basketary. I was asking why couldn’t I get a badge for doing this. I had heard about Wolf Cubs, you did things and got badges for it.
So I decided to ask the boys at school about Wolf Cubs. I found out that Wolf Cubs met at my primary school. So I came back to school in the evening. I could not find a school gate open, so I went to a local shop and brought a chocolate bar. Then I remembered that there was an entrance used by teachers in the alleyway beside the school. So I went to it and found that the door was open. I made my way through the door and to the school hall. Next memory is eating the melted chocolate on the way home.
A year later this missing part was filled in and I recalled my first Wolf Cub meeting. I saw a person at the end of the hall bending over a table with their bum facing me. This I was able to visualise. I went up to them and taped them on the bum. They turned round and this boy with a fierce look said “I want to be a Wolf Cub”.
Wolf Cubs were renamed Cub Scouts in the following years, The Boy Scouts Association was renamed The Scouting Association. Plus many other changes. I also later learnt that the boys were enrolled by their parents, or brought by a friend. I was the rarity of a boy choosing to join of their own accord.
